NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State junior pitcher Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) pitched 12 innings while allowing eight hits and just one earned run to pick up two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference wins over North Carolina A&T on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field. NSU (19-20, 6-5 MEAC) swept A&T (19-19, 3-5) 3-1, 8-0.
In game 1, Velazquez (15-10) allowed six hits, one earned run and struck out for in seven innings. She pitched five shutout innings and gave up two hits for the win in game 2.
The Lady Aggies scored their only run of the day on an RBI double by left fielder Ryanne Hill in the top of the third inning. But the Spartans posted two runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by junior catcher Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and freshman third baseman Candice Vasquez (Montclair, Calif.)
NSU tacked on one more run in the fifth on a single to center field by Ramsey.
Jennifer Luper fell to 11-9 on the season after a seven-hit, three-run outing in which she struck out six and walked two.
In game 2, the Spartans jumped all over A&T pitcher Sasha Philpot, roughing her up for eight hits and seven runs in the first two innings to take a quick 7-0 lead. Velazquez and the Spartan defense kept the Lady Aggies at bay for the rest of the game.
In the top of the sixth, junior shortstop Jamie Raab (Houston, Tex.) doubled to center field to score junior centerfielder Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) and end the game.
Philpot gave up 11 hits and eight runs (five earned) in five innings for the loss.
Eure went 2-for-4 and scored three runs in game 2 and juniors Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) and Amelia Lewis (Brampton, Ontario) each went 2-for-3. Lewis drove in two runs and scored once and Barnes knocked in three runs.
The teams conclude the three-game series with a single game at noon on Sunday.
