ETTRICK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team snapped a two-match losing streak with a convincing 7-0 win over host Virginia State on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 4-6 on the year heading into their regular-season finale next Saturday at William & Mary.
NSU cruised through the doubles sets, winning all three to take a 1-0 lead. Miroslav Vlcek (Vyskov, Czech Republic) and Petr Krakora (Brno, Czech Republic) improved their record at No. 1 doubles to 7-1 on the year wih an 8-5 win over the team of John Lanier and Robert Dunham. The Spartans got an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles thanks to the team of Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas). Keenan Ruff (Norfolk, Va.) and Roosevelt Cooper (Washington, D.C.) wrapped up the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 3.
Vlcek (No. 1), Culver (No. 2) and Sessom (No. 6) notched straight-set singles wins for NSU. Krakora (No. 3), Jahvair Mullings (Kingston, Jamaica) (No. 4) and Ruff (No. 5) each lost their first set, but won in three sets as the Spartans won all six singles matches. Mullings and Ruff each won a third-set super-tiebreaker.
