NORFOLK, Va.
– Senior right fielder Jerrod Farley (Chester, Va.) was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI to help Norfolk State rally for a 5-4 win over Longwood in the nightcap as the Spartans salvaged a split of a Wednesday afternoon doubleheader with the Lancers at Marty L. Miller Field.

Longwood (17-10) won the opener 5-0 behind a three-hit shutout by John Walker II (4-1).

In game 2, the Lancers took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Phil Cerreto. But NSU (8-13) answered with two runs in the second. Farley got the rally started with an RBI single, and Drew Suttmiller (Chesapeake, Va.) followed with an RBI double down the first-base line to give NSU its first lead of the day, 2-1.

The Lancers regained the lead at 3-2 in the third inning. Cerreto tied the game with another RBI single, and Brant Jones stole home on a double-steal with Casey Havers.

But Farley tied it again with a solo homer to right off of Longwood reliever Mark Montgomery in the bottom of the fourth. The homer was Farley's fourth of the season, a career high.

The Lancers held their last lead, at 4-3, on Havers' solo homer in the fifth off NSU reliever Ryan Davis (Gilbert, Ariz.). But the Spartans' bats remained hot in the bottom of the fifth. TiQuan Griffin (Florence, S.C.) walked to lead off the inning and went to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run single by John Lynch (Newport News, Va.).

Griffin scored on an RBI single by Anselmo Cantu (Virginia Beach, Va.) to tie the game at 4-all. Lynch scored on a deep sacrifice fly to center by Jermaine Berry (Suffolk, Va.) to give NSU the 5-4 edge.

The Spartans maintained the lead as Chase Davenport (Wooster, Ohio) pitched a scoreless sixth and Quinn Bright (Virginia Beach, Va.) earned his first career save with a scoreless seventh inning.

Davis (1-2) earned his first win as a Spartan, allowing one run in two innings of relief.

The first game was all Longwood as Walker allowed just three hits, walked none and fanned five. Seven different Lancers had at least one hit.

Lynch led NSU with a 3-for-6 day. Jones and Cerreto had three hits each for Longwood.

NSU hosts Bethune-Cookman this Saturday and Sunday for a three-game MEAC series. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
