MEAC Outdoor Friday Results
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Juniors Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) and Marlon Woods (Norfolk, Va.) added to their remarkable track seasons by winning the conference long jump and high jump titles, respectively, on Friday at the 2009 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
Woods (18) and Vinston (15.5) combined for 33.5 points Friday to help the Spartans surge to the meet lead with 60.5 points heading into the final day. Morgan State is second with 30 points.
The All-American long jumpers continued their dominance of the conference, as Vinston took first place and Woods second on Friday. Vinston capped off his personal indoor-outdoor sweep of the MEAC long jump titles with his jump of 7.67 meters (25 feet, 2 inches). That came in his third attempt. Vinston also qualified for the NCAA regionals later this month in the process.
Woods, who has already qualified for the regionals, leapt 7.60 meters (24-11.25) in his first attempt and finished second. This marks the fourth straight MEAC meet in which Vinston and Woods finished first and second in some order in the long jump.
Freshman Darris Shelton (Hampton, Va.) gave NSU a total of 21 points in the long jump by finishing sixth (7.10m, 23-3.5). Shelton also placed fifth in the decathlon (5,758 points) and Meredith Whitties (Petersburg, Va.) came in fourth (5,811).
Woods put an end to his day by winning his sixth straight MEAC high jump championship with a top height of 2.15 meters (7-0.5). That also qualified him for the regionals. Woods has won all three MEAC indoor and all three MEAC outdoor titles in his career to this point. Vinston tied for third in the high jump (2.05m, 6-8.75), and Raphael Hall (Chesapeake, Va.) was sixth (2.0m, 6-6.75).
Sophomore Kendrick Richardson (Richmond, Va.) added to the Spartans' haul in the field events with a personal-best throw of 45.10 meters (147-11) to take second in the discus throw.
Other highlights for NSU on Friday included a pair of regional qualifiers in the 200 meter heats. Thomas Speller (Chesapeake, Va.) and Trayman Hill (Greensville County, Va.) each ran an outdoor PR. Speller ran a time of 21.01 seconds to qualify for Saturday's final. Though he did not qualify for the final, Hill ran a time of 21.31 seconds to qualify for the regional.
Competition resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the men's and women's triple jump.
