ORMOND BEACH, Fla. — The Hampton University softball team, the third seed in the MEAC northern division, eliminated No. 3 (southern division) Norfolk State from the 2009 MEAC Tournament with a 5-0 win on Thursday afternoon at the Ormond Beach Softball Complex.
NSU, the runners-up at the 2008 championship, ends the season at 22-25 overall. Hampton advances to play northern division second seed Delaware State at 9 a.m. on Friday.
Hampton (24-22) struck first, scoring a run in the top of the first on an RBI single by Ashley Weissenbach. The Lady Pirates added another run in the fourth on Rebecca Magett's infield single.
Hampton scored twice in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead and got one more run in the seventh on a home run to center field by Jada Jeffries.
Amanda Black earned the win for Hampton after a seven-inning, three-hit shutout. Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) gave up 14 hits, five runs (three earned) and struck out three in her 20th complete game of the season for the loss. She ends the year with a 17-14 record.
For Hampton, Tiffany Brents was 3-for-3 and scored one run, while Jeffries went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a game-high 15 putouts. Three different Spartans had one hit each.
