Spartan Football Hosts Virginia State in Labor Day Classic

NSU Opens 2009 Season on Saturday

All-MEAC RB DeAngelo Branche and the Spartans kick off the 2009 season on Saturday.

Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk State football team opens its 2009 season on Saturday by hosting old CIAA foe Virginia State in the Virginia Lottery Labor Day Classic. Kickoff is 6 p.m. at Dick Price Stadium.

The Spartans are coming off of a 5-7 campaign in 2008 which ended with three victories over the final four games. Sixteen starters return, including seven on both sides of the ball and both kickers, for fifth-year head coach Pete Adrian.

Virginia State is 1-0 on the young season after a 37-7 win at Livingstone College last Saturday. The Trojans went 5-5 last season and also won three of their final four contests.

NSU will be seeking its fourth straight win in this series, though VSU holds a 26-19-1 all-time edge.

The game will be broadcast on the NSU Sports Network on 91.1 and 102.1 FM and 1490 AM in the Hampton Roads area. Ross Gordon and Chris Park have the call. The audio simulcast is available here.
