Broadbent named Defensive Player of the Week; James earns Specialist of the Week honors

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State earned a pair of MEAC weekly football honors announced Monday, with Kaleb Broadbent named Defensive Player of the Week and Christian James selected as Specialist of the Week following the Spartans' dominant 62-0 Homecoming victory over Virginia University of Lynchburg.

Broadbent delivered a standout performance in the Norfolk State secondary, recording two interceptions, two solo tackles and a pass breakup.

The defensive back returned his two interceptions for a combined 41 yards, highlighted by a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown in the second quarter. The score helped the Spartans continue to pull away during a dominant first half.

Broadbent played a key role in a Norfolk State defensive effort that forced six turnovers, including four interceptions. The Spartans limited Virginia-Lynchburg to just 48 rushing yards and 224 yards of total offense while securing their second shutout of the season.

James provided one of the biggest special teams highlights of the afternoon, breaking free for a 63-yard punt-return touchdown in the second quarter.

The explosive return extended Norfolk State's lead to 34-0 and contributed to a special teams unit that produced two touchdowns in the victory.

James' 63-yard return gave Norfolk State another non-offensive score during a performance in which the Spartans consistently created points through defense and special teams.

Norfolk State secured its fourth victory of the season with the 62-0 win, continuing its strong play at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
