Game Notes

NORFOLK, Va. — Quanneisha Perry had a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Hampton women's basketball team to a 63-59 overtime win on Saturday afternoon in the Battle of the Bay at Echols Hall. Perry was 9-of-23 from the floor, 5-of-9 from the free-throw line and had two blocks for the game.

With three seconds left in regulation, Marian Brooks (Woodbridge, Va.) hit a layup to force the eighth tie of the contest (53-all) and to send it into overtime. Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) drilled a 3-pointer 22 seconds into overtime to put NSU (2-10, 0-4 MEAC) up 56-53. But back-to-back jumpers by Hampton (6-9, 2-2 MEAC) gave the Lady Pirates a one-point advantage, 57-56 with 3:24 left in overtime.

Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.) tied it up again after making two free throws with 1:52 left, but Laura Lewis answered immediately on the other end with a jumper to give Hampton the lead for good.

The Spartans scored first to start the game when Long hit a layup with 19:21 in the first half. Hampton did not get on the board until more than four minutes later when Whitney Hill connected on a pair of free throws with 15:04 left.

The Lady Pirates then went on an 18-5 run to go up 20-7 with 6:56 left, but NSU went on a run of its own to get within one, 20-19, on a layup by Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) at the 2:18 mark. Jericka Jenkins hit a jumper with 26 seconds left in the half to give Hampton a 24-21 advantage going into halftime.

Things were close the entire second half with neither team leading by more than five points. There were a total of nine ties in the game and seven lead changes along the way.

For Hampton, Breanna Jones just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine boards. Hill had nine points, three rebounds and two assists.

Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) led NSU with a season-high 15 points and Long contributed 14 points. Brooks crashed the boards, tallying a career-high 14 rebounds.
