LANDOVER, Md. – The Norfolk State men's track team captured four first-place finishes on Saturday as the Spartans finished with a meet-high 107.5 points at the University of Maryland Invitational.
First-year sophomore Sean Holston (Springfield, Va.) ran a time of 21.76 seconds to win the men's 200 meters. Fellow rookie Kenneth Smith (Newport News, Va.), a freshman, captured the 400 meters in a time of 50.43 seconds to cap another strong day for the NSU sprinters.
Junior Aramis Massenburg (Ettrick, Va.) won his signature event for the second week in a row, taking first place in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.09 seconds.
The Spartan relay teams also had a nice showing. The distance medley team of Josef Tessema (Springfield, Va.), Darryl Brickhouse (Suffolk, Va.), Vincent Brown (Peachtree City, Ga.) and Philemon Kimutai (Eldoret, Kenya) was victorious in a time of 10.21.60.
The 4x400 team of Holston, Smith, Tyrell Moon (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Thomas Speller (Chesapeake, Va.) improved on its time from last week by roughly three seconds, coming in second in 3:14.26.
Leading the field athletes was sophomore Theo Duncan (Ashland, Va.) in the shot put. In his first competition of the season, Duncan placed third overall and first among collegiate athletes with a throw of 52 feet, 7.5 inches. Freshman Frede Spellman (Chesapeake, Va.) was right behind with a best of 50-7.5
NSU is slated to have athletes compete in both the Virginia Tech and Hampton Invitationals next Friday and Saturday.
