DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Jalisa Isaac scored a game high 26 points, 14 in the first half, to lead the Bethune-Cookman women's basketball team to a 79-61 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Moor Gymnasium.
Isaac was 9-of-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. She added six rebounds and one block and scored 10 points in the first 7:48 of the game.
B-CU (5-8. 1-1 MEAC) opened the game on a 23-6 run that was capped by a pair of free throws by Sarah Bolden with 11:42 left in the first half. NSU (2-8, 0-2) got within eight, 31-23 after two made free throws by Marquilla Evans (Portsmouth, Va.) at the 6:07 mark. But the Lady Wildcats went on a 10-3 run to end the half and went into the break up 41-26.
The Spartans came out more focused in the second half and cut the Lady Wildcats' lead to nine, 47-38, after a jumper by Tiora Hackley (Virginia Beach, Va.) with 15 minutes left in the game. But back-to-back misses by Batavia Owens (Norfolk, Va.) and Hackley deflated NSU's momentum and allowed B-CU to regain a double-digit lead (48-38) after a free throw by Euneshia Proctor with 14:21 left.
NSU could get no closer than 15 the rest of the way. A jumper by Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) with 47 seconds left ended the scoring for the game.
B-CU shot 47.3 percent (26-of-55) from the field for the game and 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from beyond the arc. The Lady Wildcats connected on 22 of their 31 free-throw attempts and outrebounded the Spartans 40-39.
NSU was 21-of-60 (35.0 percent) from the floor and 3-of-11 (27.3 percent) from 3-point range. The Spartans shot 64.0 percent (16-of-25) from the charity stripe and committed two more turnovers (25) than B-CU (23).
Demetria Frank had 14 points and nine steals for B-CU. Bolden added a double-double 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Proctor had 13 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals.
Bridges led NSU with 14 points and added three boards and two blocks. Hackley had 11 points off the bench and Owens had career-highs of eight points and 10 boards. Recca Trice (Arlington, Texas) had a career-high 10 points.
The Spartans head north to take on the Lady Rattlers of Florida A&M at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
