Spartans Post 5-8 Record at UMES Hawk Classic

MILLSBORO, Del. – The Norfolk State bowling team rebounded from a poor start and went 5-8 over the weekend at the UMES Hawk Classic.

The Spartans struggled on the first day of play, going 0-5 in the Baker games Friday before rebounding in the team format. NSU posted a 3-2 mark in those games and then went 2-1 in bracket play.

Junior Chelsea Krall and sophomore Lauren Graupmann led the Spartans in the team format games, as Krall averaged 211.0 in four games, while Graupmann bowled all five and posted an average of 207.8. Graupmann bowled three 200 games, including a career-high 234, in posting a 200 average for the first time in her collegiate career.

Krall did the same, bowling two 200 games and posting a career-high 256. Her 211.0 average also marked the first time at NSU she went over that 200 mark in terms of average.

Freshman Thea Aspiras and sophomore Jessica Overton also performed well. Aspiras averaged 196.0, with a high of 226 and four games all-together above 190. Overton averaged 193.0 and had three games above 200. Overton's high game of 228 and her 196.0 average both were collegiate highs.

Junior Sheila-Marie Smith averaged 172.0 in three games, while senior Antoinette Drakeford carried a 167.0 average in three games.

Looking to get back on track on Saturday, NSU did just that, winning its first three games of the team format. NSU defeated Sacred Heart, 988-912, then picked up a victory over Morgan State, 997-817. A win over Monmouth by a 987-887 score was followed by back-to-back losses to Delaware State (990-878) and a heart-breaking loss to Kutztown (1,011-995).

The Spartans defeated Monmouth, 4 games to 1, in the first match of bracket play Sunday, and followed that up with a 4.5-3.5 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the next match. St. Francis was too much in the final match, defeating NSU, 4-2, as the Spartans took 14th place in the tournament.

NSU fell to the eventual tournament champion, UMES, to open up Baker play Friday, 725-692. The Spartans then dropped matches to Adelphi (748-607), St. Francis (861-668), New Jersey City (742-715) and Fairleigh Dickinson (795-652).

NSU will get a break for Thanksgiving before returning to the AMF Lanes in Chesapeake for the second home tournament of the season. The Spartans will host the MEAC Southern Divisional Dec. 4-5 at their home alley looking to build off of last week's 7-3 record when the Spartans took first place at the first Southern Divisional of the season Nov. 13-14.
