Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. – Mike Glover had game highs of 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Scott Machado keyed a late run as Iona rallied past Norfolk State 73-64 on Tuesday night at Echols Hall.

Machado either scored or assisted on every Iona basket in the final 5:35 to propel the Gaels (3-3) to their third straight win. Kyle O'Quinn (Jamaica, N.Y.) and Marcos Tamares (Queens, N.Y.) had 15 points apiece to lead the Spartans (1-5), who lost their fourth straight game.

NSU led 61-57 after a layup by Jordan Weathers (Los Angeles, Calif.) with 5:40 left before Machado went to work. He scored the game's next four points to force a tie, then assisted on a dunk by Glover that gave Iona the lead for good, at 63-61, with 3:03 remaining.

The teams traded free throws, then Machado dished to Glover for another bucket, extending Iona's lead to four. Machado then converted a layup of his own to push the lead to 68-62 with 1:28 left, and the Spartans could not get closer than four the rest of the way.

Kyle Smyth and Randy Dezouvre scored 12 points apiece and Iona limited NSU to 35 percent shooting in the first half. Dezouvre's basket with 3:59 left in the first half gave the Gaels their biggest lead of the game at 34-15. But Tamares hit two 3-pointers to key NSU's 16-4 run to end the half and brought the Spartans within 38-31 heading into the second half.

Rob Hampton (Queens, N.Y.) scored six points in a 9-0 NSU spurt early in the second half that gave the Spartans a 44-41 lead. NSU led by as many as six before Iona rallied.

Smith had 18 points and hit all five of Iona's 3-point field goals.

Both teams shot 43 percent from the floor, but Iona scored 28 points off 21 NSU turnovers.

Tamares, who missed the last two games due to a sprained ankle, hit 5-of-8 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range en route to his career-high 15 points. O'Quinn was just 3-of-11 from the floor, but made 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. The junior also had 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and blocked six shots, one shy of tying his career high. He added three assists and two steals to his all-around effort.

Hampton was the other Spartan in double figures, with 14 points.

The Spartans look to end their losing streak as they begin MEAC play this Saturday at North Carolina A&T. Tip-off is at 4 p.m. in Greensboro, N.C.
