Final Results
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — The Norfolk State women's track team had a good outing at the 2009 Penn State National this past weekend. Leading the performers were Shanneka Claiborne (Ettrick, Va.) and Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) in the short-distance races and Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) in the invitational section of the mile run.
Claiborne qualified for the semifinals of the 60 meters in 7.56 and finished ninth in the semis in 7.54. She also ran in the 200, finishing 10th in 24.98. Kirby ran an 8.55 in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles and an 8.70 in the semis. She was also the Spartans' top finisher in the long jump with a jump of 17 feet, 8 ¾ inches.
Chichester finished sixth in the invitational mile (5:00.64) and Jamia Hutto (Orlando, Fla.) ran a 5:30.19 in the open mile. In the 400, Dania Sanford (Marshall, Va) finished ninth in 57.32 and Allyssa Pickett (Hampton, Va.) ran a 58.84.
Tanisha Jenkins (Louisa, Va.) finished 11th in the triple jump (37-3 ¼) and was followed by Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) who came in 13th with a jump of 36-10 ¼.
The Spartans have the next week and half to prepare for the 2009 MEAC Indoor Championship, which will be held in Landover, Md. from Feb. 11-13.
