Spartan Women in 2nd Place After Day 1 at MEAC Track Championships

Wanetta Kirby won the high jump title at the 2010 MEAC Indoor Championship.

LANDOVER, Md. —  After six scored events, the Norfolk State women's track team is in second place with 41 points at the 2010 MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince Georges Sports and Learning Complex. The Spartans scored in all six events and are 12 points behind current leader Maryland Eastern Shore.

The Spartans came up big in the high jump with a 1-2-6 finish for a total of 21 points. Wanetta Kirby (Richmond, Va.) won the title after clearing 5 feet, 7 inches. She'Anna Mitchell (Hampton, Va.) and Jonee Artis (Chesapeake, Va.) both cleared 5-5 to finish second and sixth, respectively.

Kirby also scored in the long jump, finishing fifth with a jump of 18-1 ¾, and qualified for the final of Saturday's 60-meter hurdles. She finished fifth in the preliminaries in 8.70 to advance to the finals. Ashanti Matthews (Norfolk, Va.) got the Spartans some more points in the long jump by coming in seventh with a leap of 17-9.

Kaleena Gray (Coatesville, Pa.) competed in the weight throw and shot put, finishing fifth and setting a new school record (48-10 ¾) and eighth (40-4 ¼), respectively. Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.) ran a 2:14.73 in the 800 meters for a sixth-place finish and the distance medley relay team finished fourth in 12:36.79.

The Spartans also had runners qualify for the finals of the 60, 200 and 400. Competition resumes at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the women's pole vault and pentathlon events.
