NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team dropped to 0-4 on the year after a pair of tough losses last weekend. The Spartans fell 4-1 to Hampton on Friday in Newport News, and suffered a 5-2 setback against Christopher Newport at ODU's Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center on Saturday.
One bright spot for NSU was the play of junior Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.), who won both his singles matches against the Pirates and Captains. After dropping the first set to HU's Nelio Mattos, Culver came back to win the second and third sets 7-6 in a pair of tie-breakers. The Pirates won the other four contested singles matches, but the teams did not play doubles due to limited court time.
Against CNU, the Spartans defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. Culver and sophomore Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England) earned an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, but CNU won No. 2 doubles to take the doubles point.
Culver and Marks both played well in winning their matches at No. 1 and 2 singles in straight sets. But CNU bounced back and won at Nos. 3, 4 and 5 singles to finish off the win.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, Feb. 27 when they host Chowan University at the NSU Tennis Complex. The match starts at 1 p.m.
