DURHAM, N.C. — The Norfolk State softball team opened the 2010 season by splitting a doubleheader with North Carolina Central on Thursday at Thomas Brooks Park. NSU (1-1) defeated NCCU 10-0 in game 1 and fell 10-9 in eight innings in the second game.
Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) pitched a five-hit, four inning shut out in game 1 for her first win of the season. The Spartans scored early in the game on a two-RBI single in the first inning by Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.). They tacked on a run in the second and third innings and scored two more in the fourth on a two-RBI triple by Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) to go up 6-0.
In the fifth inning, Meagan Long (Virginia Beach, Va.) doubled to right field to score Kristin Fungo (Norfolk, Va.). Two batters later, Barnes drove in three runs with her second triple of the game to give the Spartans a 10-run advantage.
Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) relieved Velazquez in the bottom of the fifth and got three quick outs to end the game. For NCCU (1-2), Shamika Chavis-Hodge fell to 0-1 after pitching 4.1 innings and giving up 11 hits, 10 earned runs and walking six batters.
In game 2, the Spartans were down 4-2 after the first inning, but they took a 7-4 lead in the fourth inning after a two-RBI single by Jamie Raab (Houston, Texas). NSU led by four, 8-4, heading into the bottom of the seventh, but NCCU put four runs on the board in the bottom of the frame to force an extra inning.
Pomeroy scored on a RBI-groundout by Sarah Spanka (Virginia Beach, Va.) in the top of the eighth. But Trishann Hayes drove in two runs with her double to left center to win the game for NCCU.
Kayla McPeek pitched an eight-inning complete game and allowed 11 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and walked four for the win. Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.) suffered her first loss as a Spartan after 1.1 relief innings where she gave up five hits, six runs and walked two. Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif.) got a no-decision after pitching six innings and giving up nine hits and four runs.
Barnes went a combined 4-for-8 with two triples and five RBI. Raab and Pomeroy each went 3-for-4 on the day. Raab scored three times and drove in four runs, while Pomeroy scored twice.
The Spartans host Canisius in a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field.
