NORFOLK, Va. — The Canisius softball team swept a doubleheader from Norfolk State on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field. The Griffins won 7-0, 8-0.
In game 1, Canisius (2-5) struck first by scoring four runs on five hits in the top of the second inning. The Griffins tacked on two more runs in the fourth and one in the sixth for the win.
Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.) had NSU's (1-3) only hit in the first game. For Canisius, Michelle Fridey was 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI and Lizzy Gatto went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI.
Caroline Main picked up the win after pitching a one-hit, complete-game shutout. She struck out five and walked one. Alyssa Velazquez(Aurora, Colo.) took the loss for the Spartans after giving up eight hits and six runs (five earned) in four innings.
Canisius dominated the second game and limited NSU to just three hits. Amanda Baun pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 14 in seven innings.
Ramirez went a combined 2-for-5 for the Spartans. Katie Lancellotti was 1-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a walk in game 2.
Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) suffered her first loss of the season after pitching 6.1 innings where she allowed seven hits, eight earned runs and walked five.
The Spartans host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. on Friday in the opening game of the Spartan Invitational. Farleigh Dickenson, Rider and Iona will also participate in the three-day tournament.
