NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's basketball team got its time in the national spotlight on Monday night and didn't disappoint. Playing before a live TV audience on ESPNU against South Carolina State at Echols Hall, the Spartans cruised to their fourth straight win, 82-62.
NSU's crowd-pleasing performance also featured two plays selected by ESPN to be part of that night's SportsCenter top plays for the day across the worldwide sports landscape. An emphatic first-half blocked shot by Joseph Dorsett-Jeffreys (Bronx, N.Y.) was selected as Monday's No. 7 play on the top-10 countdown. Dorsett-Jeffreys, one of three seniors playing in his final home game as a Spartan, finished the night with one of his best performances of the year – 12 points, six rebounds, one block and one steal in 21 minutes.
Guard Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) turned in what was picked as the No. 3 plays of the day, a steal and slam dunk in the second half. The senior picked off an inbounds pass near the top of the key in SCSU's end of the floor, dribbled coast-to-coast before bouncing the ball high off the floor to himself, catching it at the top of his jump and slamming it home. Deloach finished with a game-high 31 points, five steals, four assists and three steals while shooting 12-of-17 from the floor.
The red-hot Spartans (9-17, 7-6 MEAC) have now won six of their last seven and sit in fourth place in the MEAC standings, one-half game behind SCSU for third place. NSU will carry that momentum into Saturday's 4 p.m. game at conference leader and defending MEAC champion Morgan State.
