NORFOLK, Va. — Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) went 2-for-3 with three runs, three RBI and a walk to help the Norfolk State softball team to an 11-7 win over Quinnipaic in the opening game of the 2010 Spartan Invitational on Friday night at the NSU Softball Field.
NSU (2-2) opened the game by posting three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Wright had a two-RBI double in her first at-bat of the game and then scored on Meghan Ramsey's (Virginia Beach, Va.) single to right field.
The Spartans jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning, but Quinnipiac (0-3) scored four runs in the top of the third to close the gap. NSU took n 11-5 lead after the fifth inning and held the Bobcats scoreless in the sixth.
Quinnipiac got two runs on a home run by Kelly Le Bel with no outs in the seventh, but could get no closer.
Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) earned the win for the Spartans after allowing three hits, three runs (two earned) and walking two batters in 4.1 innings in relief. Jaime Iaquinto suffered her first loss of the season after giving up three hits and five runs in two innings.
Le Bel was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI for Quinnipiac.
For NSU, Jamie Raab (Houston, Texas) went 2-for-3 and scored three runs, while Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.) was 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
Tournament play resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. when Fairleigh Dickinson takes on Iona. NSU plays Fairleigh Dickinson at 1 p.m. and Rider at 3 p.m.
