NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team recorded its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon in convincing fashion, topping visiting Chowan 6-0 at the NSU Tennis Complex.
The Spartans (1-4) dropped a total of one game in five straight-sets singles win and two doubles victories.
NSU led 1-0 after doubles as the teams of Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Jonathan Sessom (Houston, Texas) won at No. 1 and Keenan Ruff (Norfolk, Va.) and Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England) prevailed at No. 2, both by 8-0 margins.
Culver, Marks, Sessom and Ruff cruised to 6-0, 6-0 wins at Nos. 1-4 singles. Freshman Dexter McDowell (Suffolk, Va.) earned his first collegiate singles win with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Charles Fisher at the No. 5 position.
The Spartans are back in action this Thursday through Saturday at a MEAC Southern Division round-robin event in Sumter, S.C. NSU faces Bethune-Cookman on Thursday, South Carolina State on Friday, and both Florida A&M and Winston-Salem State on Saturday.
