Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. — Iona pitcher Sarah Jackson tossed five hitless innings and struck out nine batters in a 12-0 win over Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2010 Spartan Invitational.

Iona (3-4) dominated the game from the beginning. The Gaels had five hits and capitalized on three Spartan errors in the bottom of the first to jump out a speedy 8-0 lead. They took an 11-0 lead in the third after a three-run home run by Eileen McCann. Iona tacked on one more run in the fourth on a homer by Beth Kann.

The closest NSU came to scoring was in the top of the third. Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) got on base on a throwing error by third baseman Amy Metcalfe. She stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.), but was stranded when Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) went down swinging for the third out.

Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) took the loss for the Spartans (2-6). She allowed nine hits and 11 runs (six earned) and walked two in two and two-third innings.

The Spartans are off until Friday when they host Niagara at 7 p.m. in the opening game of the 2010 Spartan Clash. Lafayette College, Colgate and St. Bonaventure will also compete in the tournament.
