NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team dropped two games on Saturday in the 2010 Spartan Invitational Tournament at the NSU Softball Field. The Spartans fell 1-0 to Fairleigh Dickinson in eight innings and 7-2 to Rider.
In the Fairleigh Dickinson (0-2) game, Elizabeth Woidt drove in the only run of the contest in the eighth inning on a single to left field.
Caitlin Bradac earned the win for FDU after pitching a five-hit, complete-game shutout. She struck out four batters and walked two. Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) (1-2) tossed all eight innings for NSU (2-5) and allowed four hits, one run and struck out six.
Against Rider (1-5), NSU got on the board in the top of the first inning, but did not score again until the sixth. Rider posted four runs in the bottom of the third and scored in the last two innings to put the game out of reach for the Spartans.
Rachael Matreale earned her first win of the season after pitching a seven-inning complete game where she allowed one hit, two runs and struck out six. Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) fell to 1-2 on the season after giving up four hits and four runs in two and one-third innings.
NSU takes on Iona at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Rider and Quinnipiac play in the first game at 9 a.m.
