Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. — April McBride scored a game-high 20 points, while Chena Parker had a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds to carry the Maryland Eastern Shore women's basketball team to a ¬76-56 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Echols Hall. With the win, UMES improved to 8-11 over and 5-4 in the MEAC while NSU fell to 3-15, 0-8.

The game started on a bad note for the Lady Hawks as they were assessed a technical foul to start the game for failing to report the game starters prior to the game. But UMES got off the hook when Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) missed both free throws.

Once the game got underway, UMES scored the first 11 points and held NSU to just eight points over the first 12 minutes of the first half. A made free throw by Amber Cook at the 8 minute mark gave the Lady Hawks an 18-point advantage, 26-8. NSU was able to cut UMES' lead to 12, 33-21, after a jumper by Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) to go into halftime.

The Spartans came out a bit more focused in the second half, but not overcome the deficit the Lady Hawks mounted in the first half. The closest NSU could get in the second half was 11 after a layup by Whitney Long (Raleigh, N.C.) with 14:53 left in the game. A pair of free throws by Danelle Tate (Stafford, Va.) with 13 seconds left ended the scoring for the game.

UMES shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the field for the game, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from 3-point range. The Lady Hawks had 49 rebounds, 15 turnovers, 10 blocks and six steals. NSU hit 17 of their 55 field goal attempts (30.9 percent) and went 2-for-6 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc. The Spartans grabbed 28 rebounds and had 12 turnovers, five steals and one block. NSU shot a season-high 83.3 percent (20-of-24) from the charity stripe.

Cook also scored in double figures for UMES. She finished with 16 points and added eight rebounds. Parker added three blocks and one steal, while Adobi Agbasi had eight points, eight boards and a game-high five blocks.

Bridges led NSU with 14 points after making a career-high 10 free throws. Long was the Spartans' second scorer with nine points.
