Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. – Senior left hander Chase Davenport (Wooster, Ohio) allowed one earned run in six innings, and John Rasberry (Suffolk, Va.) and Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) combined for five hits and four RBI as Norfolk State beat Georgetown for the first time ever, 7-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.
TiQuan Griffin (Florence, S.C.) added a key two-run double in a four-run fourth for the Spartans (3-3-1), who are unbeaten in their last four games.
NSU got off to quick start in the bottom of the first off Hoyas starter James Heine. John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) led off with a walk before back-to-back singles by Rasberry and Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) loaded the bases. Hairston knocked in one run with a grounder to second, which the Hoyas mishandled for an error. Heine then hit Shane Hoggard (Hampton, Va.) with a pitch, which forced in Rasberry to make it 2-0.
Justin Leeson got GU on the board with a two-out, bases-loaded single in the second which scored Sean Lamont from third. Lynch, though, gunned down Dan Capeless from right-center field as Capeless tried to score from second, keeping NSU's lead at 2-1.
The Hoyas tied the game at 2-all in the fourth. Capeless doubled to lead off the inning and scored from third on a two-out NSU error, one of three Spartan miscues in the game.
But NSU jumped back ahead with a four-run bottom of the fourth. NSU roughed up Hoyas reliever Thomas Polus for four runs and five hits in the inning. Pinch hitter Ryan Montgomery (Prince George, Va.) led off with a sharp single up the middle before Sammy Serafine (Chesapeake, Va.) and Drew Suttmiller (Chesapeake, Va.) reached on infield singles to load the bases.
Griffin followed with a two-run double to the gap in right-center field to put NSU ahead 4-2. After Lynch struck out, Rasberry kept the rally going with a long two-run double to left-center to chase Polus from the game.
Hairston gave NSU some insurance in the seventh with his second career triple, scoring Rasberry from first.
Lamont knocked in a run with an RBI triple in the eighth off NSU reliever Jason Barker (Chesapeake, Va.). Lamont later scored from third on a two-out Spartan error to cut the Hoyas' deficit to 7-4.
But Ryan Shook (Virginia Beach, Va.) got the final four outs of the game, including a strikeout of Capeless with two runners on to end things in the top of the ninth. It was Shook's second save of the season.
Davenport improved to 1-1 on the season. He gave up just five hits and two runs, one earned, in six innings. He walked three and struck out three. Polus was charged with the loss after allowing five hits and four runs, all earned, in one-third of an inning.
Rasberry went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI for NSU. Hairston was 2-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBI. Serafine also finished 2-for-4 for the Spartans.
Lamont was 3-for-5 and Andy Lentz was 2-for-4 for the Hoyas.
NSU is back in action this Saturday and Sunday when Mount St. Mary's visits Marty L. Miller Field for a three-game series.
