Spartans Drop Softball Doubleheader at Longwood

FARMVILLE, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team dropped a pair of games at Longwood University on Saturday at Lancer Field. NSU (3-14) fell 6-0 in the first game and 8-3 in the second.

In game 1, Longwood pitcher Briana Wells tossed a three-hit, seven-inning shutout to improve to 16-4 on the season. Third baseman Jordan Cox led the offense by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI.

Cox doubled up the middle in the bottom of the second to score first baseman Amy Betterton to put Longwood (19-8) on the board. Catcher Brittany Matthews scored on a Spartan error in the same inning to give the Lancers a 2-0 lead. Cox struck again in the bottom of the sixth with a two-RBI double to center field to end the scoring for the game.

Spartan pitcher Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) fell to 2-7 on the season with the loss. She gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) in three innings.

The Spartans were able to generate some offense in the second game. Left fielder Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) got things started in the top of the first with an RBI single to right center field. Third baseman Candice Vasquez (Montclair, Calif.) homered down the left line in the second and first baseman Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) hit an RBI double to center field in the third to get NSU its three runs for the game.

But the Lancers pounded out 13 hits and led 6-2 after scoring three runs in each of the first two innings.

Brittany Spencer picked up the win in game 2 after giving up four hits and three runs (two earned) in four innings of work. For the Spartans, Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) fell to 1-5 after allowing four hits and four earned runs in one inning. Velazquez got a no-decision after going four innings and yielding eight hits and three earned runs.

The Spartans have the next 11 days off. They host Maryland Eastern Shore at 1 p.m. on March 31.
