NSU Bowling Team Finishes Season at MEAC Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State bowling team wrapped up a successful 2009-10 season last weekend as the Spartans were eliminated from 2010 MEAC Bowling Championship at the Gates City Lanes.

NSU, which finished with a school-record 67 victories this season, got off to a strong start in Friday's preliminary rounds. The Spartans defeated Morgan State 793-737 and UMES, the No. 1 ranked team in the country, 849-760 in their first two team games. NSU would suffer set-backs to Delaware State (914-821) and Florida A&M (937-768) in their last two team games, but bounced back with five straight baker game wins over Bethune-Cookman, South Carolina State, Hampton, MSU and UMES to wrap up Friday's action.

Freshman Jessica Overton (Mechanicsville, Va.) led NSU with 748 total pins in the four teams games on Friday, for a 187 average.

As a result of their performance in Friday's preliminary rounds, NSU earned the fourth overall seed going into Saturday's best-of-seven baker games. The Spartans opened double-elimination tournament play with a 4-1 win over Hampton to remain in the winner's bracket. But NSU then fell 4-2 to No. 1 seed and eventual tourney champ Delaware State. The Spartans and Hornets were tied at two games apiece after the first four games, but DSU pulled out a 182-175 win in game five and a 215-172 victory in game six to take the match.

That relegated NSU to the loser's bracket, where the Spartans suffered a 4-2 loss to Morgan State, eliminating NSU from the bracket. Up 3-2, MSU topped the Spartans 154-144 to clinch the match.

NSU, which remains ranked 19th in the nation in the latest national poll, finishes the season at 67-56.
