GREENSBORO, N.C. – Host North Carolina A&T hit three home runs Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of Norfolk State, 8-4, at War Memorial Stadium.
Xavier Macklin, Alex Grubb and Marquis Riley each homered for the Aggies (9-12, 3-0 MEAC). Five players had two hits each for NSU (7-8-1, 0-3), which out-hit A&T 10-8.
A&T scored first in the bottom of the first inning. Dario Little reached on an error and later scored on another Spartan miscue.
The Aggies made it 4-0 in the fourth as Macklin led off with a homer, and after Riley was hit by a pitch, Grubb hit a two-run shot.
The lead stretched to 7-0 in the fifth as Nick Rogers had an RBI single and two more runs scored on a wild pitch by NSU starter Jason Barker (Chesapeake, Va.) and an NSU error.
The Spartans' bats got going later. Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) hit a two-run single in the sixth and Juan Herrera (Santiago, D.R.) did likewise in the seventh to trim the deficit to 7-4.
But Riley capped the scoring with a lead-off homer in the bottom of the eighth.
Joyce, Herrera, Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.), John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) and Cameron Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) had two hits each for NSU.
Barker (1-2) took the loss for the Spartans. He allowed seven hits and seven runs, five earned, in five innings.
Brent Moore (1-2) earned the win for the Aggies. He surrendered eight hits and four runs, two earned, in 6.1 innings. Riley was 2-for-3 to lead the Aggies, and Little scored twice.
NSU returns to North Carolina for a 6 p.m. game at Campbell on Tuesday night.
