Spartan Women Fall 79-59 at North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Amber Calvin scored a game-high 17 points and Ta'Wuana Cook added 13 as the North Carolina A&T women's basketball team defeated Norfolk State 79-59 on Thursday night at the Corbett Sports Center. 

The Spartans will be the 11th seed going into next week's MEAC Tournament. They will play No.6  Bethune-Cookman at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.

NSU (4-22, 0-16 MEAC) led by three, 8-5, with 12:56 left in the first half after a pair of free throws by Raychele Payne (Newport News, Va.). But A&T (21-9, 14-2 MEAC) took an 11-10 lead when Nikia Gorham connected on two free throws at the 10:25 mark. Calvin hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in the first half to give the Lady Aggies a 38-25 advantage going into halftime.

A&T led by as many as 27, 73-46, in the second half. A jumper by Tyisha Bridges (Greensboro, N.C.) with 34 seconds left ended the scoring for the game.

Both teams shot evenly from the floor, but the difference was A&T's performance at the free-throw line. The Lady Aggies shot 42.2 percent (27-of-64) compared to the Spartans' 43.4 percent (23-of-53). A&T hit 20 of their 23 free throws, while NSU went 11-of-15 from the line.

For NSU, Bridges had a team-high 12 points and Genor Dalton (Martinsville, Va.) added 10 points.
