NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team fell 2-1 to Lafayette College and 6-3 to St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon in the 2010 Spartan Clash at the NSU Softball Field.
Against Lafayette, NSU (2-8) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when catcher Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on a passed ball. Lafayette (1-1) evened things up in the top of the fourth when Kerry Griffin scored on an error by shortstop Jamie Raab (Houston, Tex.).
Emily Noel scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on an RBI double by Kasey Karr.
Karr earned the win for Lafayette after pitching a three-hit, one-run complete game. She struck out eight batters and walked two. Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) fell to 1-4 on the season after allowing five hits and two runs (one earned) in seven innings.
The Spartans took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against St. Bonaventure (4-5) on a two-run home run by third baseman Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.). But the Bonnies outscored the Spartans 6-1 the rest of the way for the win.
Sheri Thompson picked up her third victory of the season after giving up five hits and three earned runs and striking out five in seven innings. Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) pitched four innings and allowed six hits and four earned runs in the loss.
The Spartans play Colgate at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
