NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State sophomore Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) was named to the All-MEAC men's tennis first team, the conference announced on Wednesday.

Culver established himself as one of the premier players in the conference in just his second season with the Spartans. He owns a 13-4 singles record, all at the No. 1 position. The 13 singles victories are the second-most by any MEAC male, and most for any MEAC male at the No. 1 position.

Culver has also compiled a 9-6 doubles record, all at the No. 1 doubles slot. That mark includes a 7-3 record with primary partner Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England).

Florida A&M's David Jackson, the only MEAC player to defeat Culver this season, was named the MEAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year. FAMU coach Carl Goodman was named Coach of the Year and Rattlers' freshman Takura Happy was named Rookie of the Year.

On the women's side, Howard swept the top honors as Michelle Brown was voted Player of the Year, Larry Strickland was named Coach of the Year, and Brittney Morgan was selected as Rookie of the Year.

The Spartan men (3-13) are the No. 4 seed from the MEAC's Southern Division and open play in the 2010 MEAC Tennis Championship this Friday against Northern No. 1 seed Hampton (10-5) at 8:30 a.m. at the Millbrook Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. The winner of that match will face the winner of Friday's South Carolina State-Morgan State contest in a Saturday semifinal.
