RALEIGH, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team had its 2010 season come to an end on Friday, dropping a 4-1 decision to Hampton the MEAC Tennis Championship quarterfinals at the Millbrook Tennis Center.

The Spartans, seeded fourth from the Southern Division, had their season end at 3-14. Hampton, the top seed from the Northern Division, advances to face the winner of Friday's S.C. State-Morgan State match in Saturday's semifinals.

Hampton took an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. The Spartans defaulted at No. 3 doubles due to a lack of players. Hampton's team of Nelio Mattos and Gellet Varga topped NSU's Arsenio Culver (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ben Marks (Worcestershire, England) 8-4 at No. 1 doubles to clinch the doubles point.

Marks earned NSU's lone point with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kenneth Green at No. 2 singles. But the Pirates took straight-set wins at Nos. 4 and 5 singles from Edson Alves and Alvin Fludd, respectively, and got a default point at No. 6 singles to seal the win.

The Spartans lose just one senior, Keenan Ruff (Norfolk, Va.), from this year's team heading into the 2010-11 school year.
