ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State pitcher Raven Johnson pitched two complete seven-inning games and allowed a total of 23 hits, six runs (three earned) and struck out seven batters to lead the Lady Bulldogs to an 8-3, 6-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field. SCSU improved to 7-30 overall and 3-5 in the MEAC, while NSU fell to 9-22, 2-6.
In the first game, SCSU jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead after the first two innings. NSU got on the board in the top of the fourth when Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) scored on a double by Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) to cut SCSU's lead to 3-1. But the Lady Bulldogs outscored the Spartans 5-2 over the next three innings to take the game.
Velazquez pitched three innings and gave up seven hits and seven runs (three earned) in the losing effort.
SCSU scored early in the second game, but the Spartans tied it at 1-all when Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) in the top of the third inning.
The Lady Bulldogs struck again in the bottom of the fifth when they scored four runs on four hits, but NSU closed the gap to 5-3 in the sixth inning. Wright led off the inning with a triple and scored one batter later. The Spartans scored another run on an RBI single by Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.), but would not score again for the rest of the game.
Velazquez suffered her second loss of the day after pitching four and one-third innings and allowing nine hits and five runs (one earned) in game 2.
On the day, Ramirez went 6-for-8 with an RBI and a run, while Wright was 4-for-8 and Velazquez went 3-for-6.
The teams conclude their three-game series with a single game starting at noon on Sunday.
