NSU Softball Downs S.C. State 6-2

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The Norfolk State softball team posted a 6-2 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over South Carolina State on Sunday afternoon at Lady Bulldog Field. NSU (10-22, 3-6 MEAC) scored all its runs in the first five innings and held SCSU (7-31, 3-6) scoreless until the bottom of the sixth.

The Spartans got a run in each of the first two frames and scored three in the top of the third. NSU had three straight hits to start off the third inning and Casey Pomeroy (Fallon, Nev.) drove in two with a double. One more run scored on Meagan Long's (Virginia Beach, Va.) RBI groundout to put NSU up 5-0.

Pomeroy's sacrifice fly in the fifth scored Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.), giving the Spartans their sixth and final run of the game. SCSU scored its two runs on an RBI double by Channell Thompson and an RBI single by Samantha Cain.

Elizabeth Castaneda  (Montclair, Calif.) picked up her third win of the season after pitching a seven-hit, two-run complete game in which she struck out three batters and walked one. Raven Johnson was the losing pitcher, giving up seven hits and six runs (four earned) in seven innings.

Castaneda went 2-for-4 and scored a run, while seven other Spartans had at least one hit. Pomeroy had a game-high three RBI.
