NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team opened its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference season by splitting a doubleheader with Bethune-Cookman on Friday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field. The Spartans won the first game 3-1 and fell 5-3 in eight innings in game 2.

NSU second baseman Gipsy Ramirez (LaVerne, Calif.) drove in the first run of the game with a single to right field in the bottom of the second inning of game 1. Bethune-Cookman (15-18, 1-1 MEAC) answered in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by third baseman Michelle Banuelos-Smith to tie the game at 1-all.

Lady Wildcat pitcher Allie Garcia walked in the go-ahead run when she walked Jamie Raab (Houston, Tex.) with the bases loaded. NSU (6-15, 1-1 MEAC) tacked on an insurance run in the sixth when catcher Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in Raab to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.

Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) picked up the win after pitching a four-hit, one run complete game. She struck out one batter and walked two. Garcia took the loss after she allowed 10 hits and three runs (two earned) and struck out seven in six innings.

In game 2, designate player Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) singled to left field to score Ramirez, putting NSU up 1-0 in the first inning. B-CU picked up a run in the top of the second to tie the game, and neither team scored again in the next five innings to force an extra frame.

The Lady Wildcats posted four runs in the top of the eighth with two coming on a triple by catcher Sabrina Ferguson. The Spartans only managed two runs which came from RBI singles by Raab and first baseman Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) each with two outs. But Ramsey popped up to the short stop for the third and final out.

Garcia and Velazquez each went the distance in the night cap. Garcia tossed all eight innings while allowing nine hits and three runs (two earned). Velazquez gave up eight hits and five runs (four earned).

Sarah Spanka (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Sauceda each went 2-for-4 in game 1. Ramirez and Barnes also had two hits in four at-bats in the second game.

The teams conclude the three-game series with a noon game on Saturday.
