Spanka, Spartans Rout Md. Eastern Shore 11-0, 10-4

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Norfolk State freshman catcher Sarah Spanka (Virginia Beach, Va.) went a combined 3-for-5 with three doubles and three walks, drove in six runs and scored three in an 11-0, 10-4 doubleheader sweep of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday afternoon at Lady Hawks Field.

Spanka had single-game career-highs in doubles (2) and RBI (3) and matched her single-game bests in runs scored (2) and walks (2).

NSU (12-24) scored four runs in the top of the third inning and one in the fourth to take 5-0 lead. In the fifth, Megan Long (Virginia Beach, Va.) drove in two more runs with a double to put the Spartans up 7-0.

Spanka blasted her second double of the day to bring in three of NSU's four runs in the sixth inning.

Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) pitched a six-inning, three-hit shutout and struck out six for the win. Inde Whitehusrt, the losing pitcher, gave up two hits, four earned runs and walked six in three innings.

In the second game, UMES (1-27) struck first by posting four runs in the bottom of the second. But NSU countered in the fourth by scoring nine runs. In that inning, Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) drove in three runs, Spanka brought in two, while Danielle Wright (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was responsible for one, all with doubles.

Spanka brought in the Spartans' last run in the sixth when she reached base on an error by shortstop Jasmine James.

Velazquez picked up her second win of the day after pitching five and two-third shutout innings in relief and allowing just four hits. Shanice Crowder took the loss after giving up six hits and six earned runs in three and two-third innings.

The Spartans are off until next Thursday when they play a non-conference doubleheader at Hampton at 1 p.m.
