Box Score

NORFOLK, Va.
– Visiting Coppin State sent 14 men to the plate in a nine-run sixth-inning uprising which helped the Eagles take a wild 16-13 win over Norfolk State in the rubber game of their three-game MEAC series on Saturday at Marty L. Miller Field.

The Eagles (10-12, 4-1 MEAC) trailed 13-6 after a three-run Spartan fifth that included home runs by Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) and John Lynch (Newport News, Va.). But the Eagles had 12 batters reach base to start the sixth before an out was recorded. Harry Williams and Alex Black both hit two-run doubles in the frame. Dan Gleiberman's two-run single broke a 13-all tie to give CSU a 15-13 lead. NSU (8-11-1, 1-5) used five different pitchers in the inning, which included six walks to Eagle hitters.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the eighth. Craig Richmond singled and stole second, then scored on a two-out NSU error to make it 16-13.

The Spartans weren't able to keep up, as CSU reliever Andrew Kiessling held the Spartans scoreless over the final four innings. Kiessling (1-2) picked up the win with 4.1 innings of relief.

NSU trailed 5-1 after the top of the second, only to re-take the lead with a seven-run bottom of the second inning. Juan Herrera (Santiago, D.R.) hit a long RBI double and TiQuan Griffin (Florence, S.C.) followed with an RBI triple to get things going. Chris Warren (Virginia Beach, Va.), who started the inning with a single, capped the rally with a two-out, three-run double later in the frame to give the Spartans an 8-5 lead.

CSU got within 8-6 in the third, but NSU scored twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth for a 13-6 lead. Hairston hit his team-leading sixth homer of the year, a two-run blast, to right field in the fifth. Two batters later, Lynch hit a solo shot to left for his second homer of the year.

Griffin had a season-high three hits for NSU. He and Lynch both went 3-for-5. Warren was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Ryan Wiggins (Hayes, Va.) also went 2-for-4. James Taylor (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored three runs.

Williams was 3-for-5 with four RBI for the Eagles. Black went 4-for-6 and Richmond added three hits.

NSU is back in action on Tuesday night in an exhibition game at Harbor Park against the Norfolk Tides, the Triple-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. First pitch is at 7:15 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for NSU students, youth, and groups of 25 or more.
