Garcia Pitches Bethune-Cookman Past NSU 7-0

NORFOLK, Va. — Bethune-Cookman pitcher Allison Garcia pitched a two-hit shutout and went 1-for-3 with three RBI and a walk at the plate to help the Lady Wildcats to a 7-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference win over Norfolk State on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Softball Field.

With the win, B-CU improves to 16-18 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC, while NSU falls to 6-16, 1-2.

After two scoreless innings, the Lady Wildcat offense came alive and posted four runs in the top of the third. Garcia drove in the first of the four runs in that inning and was also responsible for two more in the top of the fourth.

Second baseman Cesley Tafoya's infield single in the sixth inning gave B-CU its seventh and final run of the game.

The Spartans' two hits came from shortstop Jamie Raab (Houston, Tex.) and Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.). Starting pitcher Alyssa Velazquez (Aurora, Colo.) took the loss after allowing four runs and five hits in two and one-third innings of work.

Reliever Elizabeth Castaneda (Montclair, Calif.) tossed four and two-third innings and gave up six hits and three earned runs in a no-decision outing.

Tafoya and third baseman Michelle Banuelos-Smith each went 2-for-4 for B-CU, while center fielder Ashton Hinds was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

The Spartans take a break from their MEAC schedule on Thursday when they host North Carolina Central. The doubleheader starts at 1 p.m.
