Box Score
NORFOLK, Va. – Chris Bangi had four of visiting Campbell's 18 hits, and the Fighting Camels held on for a 14-9 win over Norfolk State on Tuesday night at Marty L. Miller Field.
Ellis Lowe and Kevin Nelson added three hits each for Campbell (26-23), which out-hit NSU (19-24-1) 18-13. John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) went 3-for-4 with a triple and a career-high-tying four RBI to lead NSU, and Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) hit his team-leading eighth homer of the season.
Campbell scored 12 runs in its first five times up. An NSU error led to an unearned run in the top of the first, but Lynch's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first tied it at 1-all.
The Fighting Camels got two runs thanks to a trio of doubles in the second, then stretched their lead to 5-1 in the third on a two-run homer off the bat of Zach Johnson (2-for-6).
But NSU scored three times in the bottom of the third to cut its deficit to 5-4. Lynch drove in Chris Warren (Virginia Beach, Va.) with a sacrifice fly, then Hairston launched a two-run bomb over the fence in right-center.
But the Spartans could not keep up with Campbell, which scored three more in the fourth and four in the fifth. The Spartans were only able to manage single runs in those frames, on a Drew Suttmiller (Chesapeake, Va.) RBI double in the fourth and a Sammy Serafine (Chesapeake, Va.) RBI single in the fifth. Despite that, the Spartans still trailed, 12-6, after five.
Both teams would cap their scoring in the eighth. Blake Boyce hit a two-run single for Campbell in the top of eighth. Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) hit an RBI single and Lynch a two-run triple in the bottom of the inning to make it 14-9.
The Spartans tried to make it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with two outs. But Ryan Montgomery (Prince George, Va.) flew out to the base of the warning track in right field to end the game.
Jonathan Lopez (3-0) earned the pitching win for Campbell with three scoreless innings of relief. Chase Davenport (Wooster, Ohio) took the loss to drop to 4-4 on the year after yielding 10 hits and eight runs, seven earned, in four innings.
Boyce, Johnson and Alan Denman had two hits each for Campbell. Bangi and Nelson each had three runs scored and two RBI. Six Camels drove in two runs apiece.
Joyce and John Rasberry (Suffolk, Va.) each had two hits for the Spartans.
NSU hosts Longwood for a three-game series this weekend to close its regular season. The teams play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. NSU will honor its four seniors prior to the doubleheader.
