Evans Announces Signing of 6 for Next Season

NORFOLK, Va. – Norfolk State men's basketball coach Anthony Evans announced Thursday the addition of six players who will play for the Spartans beginning in 2010-11. The new additions included one point guard, three wing players and two post players.

The recruits are 6-5 point guard Pendarvis Williams (Philadelphia, Pa./The Hun School), 6-2 guard JaVaughn Acree-Manuel (Lansing, Mich./Glen Oaks CC), 6-5 wing Chris McEachin (Norfolk, Va./Radford/Norview HS), 6-6 wing James Frazier (Elizabeth, N.J./NIA Prep), 6-8 post player Riley Maye (East Stroudsburg, Pa./The Peddie School) and 6-9 post player Brandon Goode (Bronx, N.Y./James Monroe HS).

“The men's basketball coaching staff is very pleased with the group of student-athletes we've been able to attract,” Evans said. “They are all talented young men who are committed academically, athletically and civically.”

Williams averaged nine points, five rebounds, five assists and 1.7 steals per game en route to All-Mid-Atlantic Prep League honors last year for The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. He shot 46 percent from the floor, 38 percent from 3-point range and 76 percent from the foul line in helping The Hun School to the state prep semifinals.

“Pendarvis is a talented point guard with good size for his position,” Evans said. “He plays hard at both ends of the court and loves to get out in transition. Moreover, he possesses a high basketball IQ and shoots the ball well from the perimeter.”

Acree-Manuel averaged 20.3 points per game, made 71 3-pointers and shot 46 percent from beyond the arc last year for Glen Oaks. He was named to the NJCAA All-Region 12 team and to the All-Michigan Community College Athletic Association first team after helping the Vikings to a 26-5 record and conference title.

“JaVaughn is a shooter with excellent range and a quick release,” Evans said. “He has the ability to attack the basket and he has a solid mid-range game.”

McEachin averaged 8.7 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game as a sophomore at Radford in 2008-09 before transferring. In 2008-09, he helped the Highlanders win the Big South championship and reach the NCAA Tournament after scoring 18 points in the tournament title win over VMI. McEachin was a first-team All-Eastern District and All-Tidewater selection as a senior at Norview High School in Norfolk in 2006-07 after averaging 19.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. He is expected to begin playing in December after sitting out per NCAA transfer rules.

“Chris is versatile wing who can score in a variety of ways,” Evans said. “He returns home to Norfolk with a wealth of experience, having been a part of Radford University's NCAA Tournament team. I am confident that he will make an immediate impact for us once he starts playing.”

Frazier averaged 12.2 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game last season at NIA Prep, earning him third-team all-state prep accolades. He also shot 43 percent from 3-point range and hit the buzzer-beating 3-pointer in a win over Brewster Academy, which at one point was ranked No. 1 in the nation for prep schools.

“James will fit well in our system. He is an athletic shooting guard who excels in transition,” Evans said. “He plays with intensity at the defensive end of the floor and rebounds well for a guard.”

Maye averaged 12.5 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game last year for The Peddie School. He was a second-team all-prep league pick by The Trentonian.

“Riley is a terrific defensive rebounder and shot blocker,” Evans said. “He is also a skilled offensive player with solid moves in the post. His shooting range extends to the 3 point line.”

Goode averaged 13 points, 13 rebounds and five blocks per game last season for James Monroe. Goode earned honorable mention All-Bronx honors by The New York Post.

“Brandon is a long, athletic forward who runs the floor well and has good hands and touch around the basket,” Evans said. “He is a versatile forward who can block shots and rebound. He continues to make improvements on his offense and has a tremendous upside.”

The Spartans welcome back four starters from last year's team which finished 11-19 overall, 9-7 in the MEAC.

“These recruits are quality young men who have a supportive family network,” Evans said. “They fit in nicely for our plans next season and beyond.”
