GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's track & field team capped off yet another yearly sweep of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's championships, winning their fifth straight conference outdoor title on Saturday at Irwin Belk Track on the North Carolina A&T campus.

The Spartans tallied 150.5 points to wrap up their fifth straight MEAC indoor-outdoor sweep. In four of those years, including this season, NSU also won the conference cross country championship to pull off the yearly triple.

Runner-up Maryland Eastern Shore finished a distant second with112 points.

NSU crowned three individual champions on Saturday. First-year sophomore Frede Spellman (Chesapeake, Va.) started the day off with a victory in the shot put. Spellman's last attempt was the winning one, as he threw his collegiate-best of 52 feet, 2 inches. That was more than a foot longer than his previous season best of 50-11.

Senior Brett Dodd (San Antonio, Texas) followed that up with a win in the pole vault, defending his 2009 title. He cleared 14 feet, 5.25 inches. Freshman Raoul Hernandez (Virginia Beach, Va.) placed third in the pole vault and Ryan Owens (Virginia Beach, Va.) fourth.

Junior Josef Tessema (Springfield, Va.) captured NSU's third victory of the day with a winning time of 3:52.88 in the 1,500 meters. He led a 1-2-3 sweep of the medals in that event, as sophomores Amos Kipkosgei (Eldoret, Kenya) and Philemon Kimutai (Eldoret, Kenya) placed second and third.

Kipkosgei had NSU's other first-place finish at the weekend's meet, with a victory in the 5,000 meters on Thursday. Kipkosgei also finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to earn the men's Most Outstanding Runner award at the meet. Spartans' coach Kenneth Giles was named men's Most Outstanding Coach.

The Spartans will have athletes from both teams competing at the 2010 NCAA East Region meet on May 28-29, which will also be held at N.C. A&T.
