NORFOLK, Va. – Right handers
Ryan Shook (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Ryan Davis (Gilbert, Ariz.) combined to toss a three-hit shutout as the Spartans completed a three-game sweep of Florida A&M, 10-0, on Sunday at
Marty L. Miller Field.
With the win, the Spartans (19-23-1 overall, 9-9 MEAC) clinch the No. 3 seed in the MEAC Tournament, which runs from May 20-23 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
NSU out-hit the Rattlers (10-31-1, 3-15) 14-3 and scored in all but one inning to end the game after seven innings due to the 10-run rule.
Sammy Serafine (Chesapeake, Va.) matched his career high with three hits, while
Ryan Wiggins (Hayes, Va.),
Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) and
Chris Warren (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked in two runs apiece.
The Spartans scored two runs in the bottom of the first.
John Rasberry (Suffolk, Va.) led off the game with a double off FAMU starter Eric Cotton (0-5) and scored on Joyce's groundout.
John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) walked with two outs, stole second and scored on a FAMU error.
Cameron Parsons (Chesapeake, Va.) led off the bottom of the second with a single, advanced on Serafine's single, and scored on Cotton's balk to make it 3-0. The Spartans stretched their lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Wiggins had an RBI single in the fourth, Parsons in the fifth and Joyce in the sixth to make it 6-0.
NSU ended the game with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Serafine knocked in the first with a run-scoring single. Wiggins walked with the bases loaded, and Warren's two-run single ended the game.
Shook and Davis held the Rattlers' offense at bay. Shook (3-2) allowed just one hit in three innings and was credited with the win in the pre-determined staff outing. He struck out two. Davis allowed two hits in four innings of work to earn the three-plus inning save. He fanned five.
Serafine was 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice. Joyce was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
TiQuan Griffin (Florence, S.C.) was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs scored, Parsons was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Lynch was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two steals.
NSU returns to action this Tuesday when it hosts Campbell at 6 p.m.
