NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team kicked off its 2011 season at Old Dominion, dropping a 7-0 decision Sunday night to the Monarchs at the ODU Tennis Center.
With half of the lineup new to NSU this year, the Spartans got things started in doubles play against the Monarchs (2-1). At the No. 2 spot, junior
Christian Romanzini and freshman
Kent Austin lost by an 8-4 score to Benjamin Chomette and Fahoum Fahoum.
At No. 1 doubles, juniors
Ben Marks and
Arsenio Culver came up short to Tobias Fanselow and Krzysztof Muzalewski, 8-3. Freshman
Brian Bullock and junior
Jonathan Sessom competed at No. 3 doubles and fell by an 8-0 score to Albert Ochagavia and Alfredo Rodriguez.
Marks came closest to pulling off the upset in singles play, as he was just short of the victory at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-5, against Chomette. Culver, at the No. 1 slot, dropped his match to Fanselow, 6-4, 6-1.
Romanzini and Austin got the starting nods at the No. 3 and 4 singles spots, respectively, with Romanzini falling in his NSU debut to Muzalewski, 6-0, 6-3. Austin, at the No. 4 spot, lost in straight sets to Ochagavia, 6-2, 6-2.
Bullock, at No. 5 singles, lost a 6-0, 6-4 decision to Fahoum, while Rodriguez swept past Sessom, 6-4, 6-3.
The NSU men will be back in action Jan. 29 at Howard. The match is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
