Men’s Track Brings Home 8 Top 5 Finishes at Va. Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Norfolk State men's track team earned eight top-five finishes over the weekend at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invitational, with several Spartans improving upon their season-best performances.

Sprinters Sean Holston and James Taylor and long jumper Rashad Cannon all took runner-up finishes in their respective events. Holston, reigning MEAC Athlete of the Week, placed second in the 300 meters in a time of 33.27 seconds, just .08 behind winner Brandon Byram of Florida State.

Taylor, meanwhile, had an impressive weekend in both of his individual events. Taylor recorded indoor PRs in the 60 and 200. His time of 6.72 seconds in the 60 was good for third place, while his clocking of 21.08 in the 200 earned him second.

Elsewhere on the track, sophomore Vincent Brown was third in the 800 meters (1:55.01), junior Philemon Kimutai was fourth in the 5,000 (14:54.27) and senior Aramis Massenburg placed fifth in the 60 hurdles (8.02).

In the jumps, Cannon improved on his season-best long jump with a leap of 27-4.25, placing second. In the high jump, sophomore John James set a new indoor PR with a height of 6-10.75, tying for fourth place.

The Spartans' 4x400 relay team also posted a season-best time. The unit clocked a time of 3:14.24 to take sixth place.

The Spartans will compete next Friday and Saturday at the Penn State National Open and the CNU Captains Classic.
