Match Results

WASHINGTON, D.C.
– The Norfolk State men's tennis team picked up its first win of the early season with a 3-2 defeat of Howard Saturday morning in the nation's capital.

Playing a 4-1 format due to time restrictions with four singles matches and one doubles match, NSU ran its record to 1-1 on the year after winning doubles and splitting the four singles matches against the Bison.

Juniors Arsenio Culver and Ben Marks posted victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, to help NSU pull out the win. Culver defeated Chris Brown, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 slot, while Marks took down Omar Haloui, 6-0, 6-3.

Junior Jonathan Sessom and freshman Brian Bullock got NSU in early position to pull out the win after winning their doubles match against Devard Wharton and Bogdan Dzakovic. The Spartan duo fell in the first set, 6-2, but rebounded to win the second set, 6-3. Bullock and Sessom won the tiebreaker, 11-9.

At No. 3 singles, Eric Chavous defeated junior Christian Romanzini, 6-2, 6-2, while freshman Kent Austin came up short against George Diggs at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Howard fell to 0-2 on the season.

The Spartans will make half the trip home and take on Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond in the VCU 4-1 Invitational Sunday afternoon.
