RICHMOND, Va.
– The Norfolk State men's tennis team dropped a pair of decisions to Virginia Commonwealth and Richmond Sunday afternoon at the VCU 4-1 Invitational.

The Spartans fell to 1-3 on the season after a 5-0 loss to No. 74 Virginia Commonwealth and a 4-1 setback to Richmond at VCU's Thalhimer Tennis Center.

The format at the invite consisted of four singles matches and one doubles match.

Against the Spiders, junior Arsenio Culver picked up his second win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Sebastian Fauchet at the No. 1 slot. NSU nearly picked up the doubles win, but freshman Brian Bullock and junior Jonathan Sessom came up a tad short against Rafa Arana and Zach Carl, 6-3, 7-6 (3).

In the other singles matches, junior Ben Marks dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to Jesse Feder at No. 2 singles, while junior Christian Romanzini lost his No. 3 singles bout to A.J. Nelson, 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 4 slot, freshman Kent Austin lost in straight sets to Justin Baker, 6-1, 6-4.

Earlier in the day NSU faced the No. 74 Rams on their home court. Despite the sweep, Culver gave his opponent all he could handle at No. 1 singles, as VCU's Tim Johannsen upended Culver, 7-6, 6-3.

Marks faced No. 123 Max Wennakoski at the No. 2 slot and lost a tough, 6-4, 6-3 decision to his ranked foe. In the other matches, Bullock lost to Alejandro Argente, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, while Filip Svensson handed Sessom a 6-1, 6-0 loss at the No. 4 slot.

In the doubles match against the Rams, Austin and Romanzini were swept by a pair of 6-0 scores by Antoine Baroz and Camill Salomon.

Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action Friday as they face Hampton at 6 p.m. at Center Court in Newport News.
