NORFOLK, Va. – UMES proved why it is favored to win the MEAC Northern Division and possibly the MEAC title this year as the Hawks quickly dispatched the Norfolk State volleyball team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Joseph Echols Hall.
Improving their record to 14-6 overall, 5-0 in the MEAC, the Hawks won, 25-15, 25-18, 25-14, and dropped NSU to 6-11 overall, 2-3 in conference play.
Junior
Charlotte Armstead posted a team-high 10 kills and also had two blocks, as she moved into first place all-time at NSU with 134 career block assists. Armstead topped the previous record of 133 set by Chanel Barnes from 2003-06.
Freshman
Adriana Ramos added five kills, six digs and two blocks against the Hawks. Senior libero
Tracey Copley tied for the match high with 11 digs, and junior
Kristen Burt totaled 20 assists.
UMES was led by the duo of Saitaua Iosia and Kaveinga Lea'Aetoa with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, as the Hawks hit .291 for the match, including .429 in the first set alone. Maline Vaitai added 11 digs and seven kills, and Jessica Vicic posted 27 assists and six digs.
The Spartans hit .044 for the match, and were hitting just .000 after the second set. UMES held advantages in digs, 40-35, and blocks, 5-4. The Hawks had 37 kills and just 12 attack errors for the match.
The Hawks took a 4-1 lead to start play, but after a service error made it 12-7, UMES used a big 7-0 run for a big lead at 19-7. Ramos added a kill and junior
Jasmine Frazier knocked down a service ace as NSU started to get closer. Armstead later hit back-to-back kills, but UMES' lead was too much as the Hawks went on to win, 25-15.
NSU held its own early in the second set, as a kill and service ace from Armstead and another kill by Frazier gave the Spartans an 8-6 lead. UMES then turned a 9-8 deficit into a 14-9 lead after a 6-0 run. UMES pushed the lead to seven, 18-11, and the Spartans got to within five at 21-16 thanks to two straight kills by junior
Beatriz Ferreira. UMES kept up its attack and went on to win, 25-18.
Armstead added three kills early in the third set, and then an attack error on Vaitai put the score at 6-5 in favor of the Spartans. After a 4-0 run by the Hawks, back-to-back kills by Ramos got NSU to within one at 10-9, but a 9-1 run by UMES gave the Hawks another big lead, 19-10. UMES had six kills over the last eight plays for the final 25-14 third-set win.
NSU will hit the road for the first time since Sept. 24 as the Spartans head to Hampton next Friday at 6 p.m.
