BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – The trio of Pendarvis Williams, Kyle O'Quinn and Chris McEachin each topped the 20-point mark to lead Norfolk State to an 84-74 win over St. Francis on Friday afternoon at the Pope Physical Education Center.
Williams poured in a career-high 24 points, O'Quinn had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and McEachin chipped in a career-high 20 points as the Spartans upper their record to 9-5 on the year with their second straight win. The 84 points are a season high for NSU, which shot 55 percent from the floor to continue its best start in the program's Division I era.
Stefan Perunicic scored 21 points to pace the Terrier (3-8). Perunicic and Travis Nichols each hit early 3-pointers to stake St. Francis to an 8-5 lead. But the Spartans responded with a 19-0 run which included a trio of 3-pointers and 11 total points from Williams, who capped the outburst with a tip-in to push NSU's lead to 24-8 with 12:33 remaining in the first half.
Williams scored all 13 of his first-half points in the game's first seven and a half minutes. He was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor, including 3-of-3 from long distance.
St. Francis gradually got as close as seven points later in the half, but a steal by Williams led to a fast-break layup and a traditional three-point play by McEachin that helped the Spartans carry a 41-31 lead into the half.
The Spartans led by at least eight points the entire second half thanks in large part to 67 percent shooting (14-of-21) from the floor. NSU also hit 70 percent (14-of-20) from the foul line in the second half.
Williams also tied for team-high honors with four assists and was credited with three steals. He finished 8-of-11 from the floor, 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. McEachin hit 7-of-10 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc.
O'Quinn tallied his ninth double-double of the season and hit 11-of-12 from the free-throw line. With his big game, he moved pass Ray Epps (855) for 10th place in school history in rebounding. O'Quinn now has 861 boards. The senior also surpassed former teammate Corey Lyons (1,230) for 23rd place in NSU annals in scoring, with 1,240 career points.
With its trio of leading scorers providing most of the firepower, the Spartans got just 11 points from their bench. But guard Jamel Fuentes made a key contribution with five points, a career-best seven rebounds and four assists in 14 minutes off the bench. His seven rebounds were second-most on the team behind O'Quinn.
Nichols joined Perunicic in double figures with 14 points for the Terriers, who made just 8-of-30 (27 percent) from 3-point range.
The Spartans have the next eight days off from competition for the holiday break before returning to action at the Naval Academy in a 4 p.m. game on Jan. 1.
