NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Sprinter Shanneka Claiborne got her senior year off on the right foot this past Sunday at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open, setting a new facility record in winning the women's 60-meter dash.
Claiborne clocked a time of 7.38 seconds to set her new personal-best and break the Freeman Center record of 7.40 set by Rachelle Boone in 2004.
Claiborne's victory was the only one for the NSU women on Sunday, but it wasn't the only notable performance. Junior Champagne Bell placed second in the long jump with a top leap of 19 feet, 3.5 inches. She also finished fifth in the 200 meters in a time of 25.55 seconds.
The Spartans' other top-five individual finish came via Katie Wright. She was fifth in the pole vault, with a top clearance of 10 feet.
The Spartans are off for the remainder of the semester and the holiday break before returning to action at UMES' Coach O Invitational on Jan. 7.
