NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State women's track and field team holds the top spot after the second day of competition at the MEAC Outdoor Championships that included a record-breaking performance from senior
Leslie Young.
Young shattered the school record in the hammer throw with a silver-medal toss of 182 feet, 11 inches. She also added a bronze medal in the shot put, hitting a mark of 45-5.
Mercyline Kimaiyo claimed her second gold medal of the meet, winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:59.16, followed by
Sonia Koech with a silver medal time of 11:17.00.
Essence Shaw placed third in the heptathlon, earning a bronze medal with 4,238 points.
Brooklyn Robinson qualified for a pair of Saturday finals, including the 100-meter hurdles (2nd - 13.10) and the 100 meters (2nd- 11.35). She also posted a personal best in the long jump, finishing fourth with a leap of 19 feet, 1.5 inches.
The Spartans qualified two runners in the 400-meter hurdles, led by
Kadynce Taylor with a personal best time of 53.85.
Kalyncia Taylor followed closely behind, clocking a personal best to place fifth (54.54).
Leanna Lewis led NSU in the 800-meter prelims, placing fourth with a time of 2:10.63, while
Jahmei Wyatt placed fifth (2:11.10).
Norfolk State leads the team standings with 81 points, narrowly ahead of Howard (78) and Morgan State (45) heading into the final day of competition.
Championship action resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the javelin and pole vault events.
