Box Score

NORFOLK, Va. – David Koczirka had three of Villanova's 22 hits and knocked in three runs to help Villanova take the rubber game of the three-game series with Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Villanova (2-1) wasted no time jumping out to a big early lead, scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the first off Spartan (1-2) starter Justin Bhatti (0-1). Koczirka hit a two-run double, Dain Hall an RBI single, and Kevin Wager executed a squeeze bunt for the fourth run of the inning.

The Spartans got one back in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Blaze Zeilman.

But Villanova would break the game open with three more runs off four hits in the fourth. Andre Geenen and Jordan Zech had back-to-back run-scoring singles, and Marlon Calbi would score from third on a wild pitch by Bhatti to make it 7-1.

The Wildcats padded their lead with one more run in the seventh, four in the eighth and one in the ninth.

Zech and Connor Jones also had three hits each for the Wildcats.

Chris Joyce was the only Spartan with two hits. He was 2-for-4 with a double, the 50th of his career. He had one in each game over the weekend. John Lynch was 1-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.

Max Almonte (1-0) got the win for Villanova, pitching four scoreless innings of relief. Bhatti (0-1) took the loss after giving up 10 hits and seven runs in three-plus innings.

The Spartans are back in action on Wednesday when they host Georgetown at 2 p.m.
